Google Pay to Shut Down in the US: A Move Towards Streamlining Mobile Payments

Google is once again reshaping its mobile payments landscape, this time by discontinuing Google Pay in the US in favor of its other service, Google Wallet, according to Finextra. The standalone Google Pay application is set to vanish on June 4th, as part of Google’s effort to «simplify the app experience,» according to a statement.
Despite the closure of the Google Pay app, users in the US will still be able to access its most popular features, such as tapping to pay in stores and managing payment methods, through Google Wallet. However, it’s worth noting that person-to-person (P2P) payments will no longer be available.
Google Wallet, which first debuted over a decade ago, has gone through several iterations. It was rebranded as Android Pay in 2015 and then as Google Pay in 2018. In 2022, Google Wallet made a comeback, replacing Google Pay in most countries. However, Google had maintained both apps in the US until now.
With Google Wallet being used five times more than Google Pay in the US, the decision was made to consolidate to a single app. This move is in line with Google’s strategy to streamline its offerings and provide a more cohesive user experience across its various services.
