Metro Bank Hosts Tech Workshops for Kids

Metro Bank, in collaboration with its engineering and transformation team led by Chief Information Officer (CIO) Faisal Hussain, has taken a significant step towards nurturing young talent from underserved communities, as outlined in Finextra news. The bank recently organized a series of technology workshops aimed at primary school children residing in some of London’s most deprived areas.

The initiative, known as «Tech Zone,» saw Metro Bank conduct a total of 16 interactive sessions. These workshops brought together enthusiastic bank employees who volunteered their time and expertise to teach young learners fundamental coding skills using micro:bit technology.

Originally developed as part of the BBC’s «Make It Digital» initiative, micro:bits are diminutive yet powerful computers equipped with an array of sensors and capabilities. These versatile devices feature buttons, LEDs, light sensors, temperature sensors, microphones, compasses, accelerometers, speakers, radios, and pins for connecting to other devices or extensions.

Faisal Hussain, the driving force behind this commendable endeavor, shared his thoughts on the initiative. He emphasized Metro Bank’s commitment to serving its community and inspiring the next generation, particularly those children who may not have ready access to technology resources. Hussain’s vision is to ignite a passion for careers in engineering and the broader tech industry among young minds by presenting them with exceptional role models—namely, Metro Bank’s dedicated employees.

In Hussain’s own words, «As a community bank, we wanted to inspire the next generation — especially kids who may not have easy access to tech — to consider working in this field. Our ultimate aim is to create future engineers by generating excitement about careers in engineering and wider tech through awesome tech role models — namely our colleagues.»

The «Tech Zone» program has garnered resounding success and recognition, with plans for expansion already in motion for the upcoming year. The program’s future prospects include the possibility of extending its reach to Metro Bank branches. These branches currently offer a financial education program for young children called «Money Zone,» further cementing the bank’s commitment to nurturing talent and providing valuable resources to the community.

Metro Bank’s dedication to empowering young minds and fostering an interest in technology and engineering exemplifies a corporate commitment to social responsibility and the future development of the tech industry. Through initiatives like «Tech Zone,» the bank is making significant strides in creating opportunities for underserved children and inspiring them to explore the exciting world of technology.
